So you’ve binged every jiu jitsu video that exists on YouTube and you’re ready to take the next step; going to your very first class. Firstly, congratulations! You’re officially about to be a white belt. Going to your first jiu jitsu class can be daunting, especially if you’re doing it solo. How should you act? What should you wear? Are there things you should or shouldn’t do? All valid questions. This blog is your crash course on everything you need to know before you step on the mats.
What is Jiu Jitsu Exactly?
Originating in Japan and later refined in Brazil, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) or grappling, focuses on ground fighting and submission holds. Think joint locks and chokes that force an opponent to "tap out”. Imagine a mix of wrestling and chess, but on the floor. There is no striking (unlike Mauy Thai or boxing), rather jiu jitsu is all about using your body to control and submit your opponent. Some frequently used words you might here in your first class: takedowns, sweeps, submissions, mount, side control, back control, guard and ‘passing the guard’. We created a short video on what each of these mean - find here on our Instagram!
What to Expect in Your First Class (Step by Step)
Arrive Early
On your first day, you’ll likely be asked to sign a waiver. This process should only take a few minutes, but arriving 10 to 15 minutes early also gives you some time to organise any gi’s or rash guards you might need to train.
Keep in mind, every gym is different. More traditional gyms may have strict structures and others may not. A reminder that you’re allowed to test out a variety of gyms before making the big commitment, that’s what the free trial is for!
Jiu Jitsu Etiquette
Here a few things to keep in mind regarding jiu jitsu culture and etiquette.
- Cut your nails! The days of having long finger and toe nails are over. Make sure you always have a nail clipper handy in case you forget.
- Thongs/flip flops must be worn off the mats. This is to make sure the mats are nice and clean for everyone when they're doing the class. Dirty feet is a no-no!
- Take your jewellery off. This is for your own good --- breaking your most-priced possession is never any fun! Put your necklace in your bag and you can put it back on as soon as the class is over.
- Tie up your hair. Girls (or long-haired dudes), this one's for you! There is nothing more annoying than not being able to see what you're doing because your hair is in your face. You'll be rolling around, chilling upside down and you'll probably get a little sweaty too. A pony tail does the trick!
- Don't injure your partner. This sounds obvious, right? Flow gently through your first few moves and don't use 100% of your strength. Focus on technique, position and body awareness.
What to wear to your first jiu jitsu class?
If you have a snug-fitting gym shirt, this will do just fine. You don't want anything with too much loose fabric (you'll get caught in your clothes!). If you're trialling a gi class, this will likely be provided to you.
Learning the Warm-Up Routine
Classes often start with a warm-up that includes movement drills, and BJJ-specific techniques like hip scapes, forwards and backwards rolls. Don’t worry if you feel a little clumsy at first; everyone does. Focus on doing your best and getting a feel for the moves.
The Technique Portion
After the warm-up, you’ll dive into the “technique” section of class. Your instructor will walk you through a few techniques - whether it’s a sweep, pass, or submission—step-by-step. Pay close attention and don’t hesitate to ask questions; instructors are there to help you.
Drilling
Now, you’ll practice these techniques with a partner in a controlled way. This is called “drilling.” Go slow, focus on the details, and try to stay as close to what the instructor showed as possible. Remember, it’s not about strength; it’s about technique.
Rolling
Usually the last 30 minutes of the class is used to 'roll' - aka, do jiu jitsu! Your first class is the perfect opportunity to watch and learn. You can sit to the side for this and give it a go next class. If a higher belt asks if you'd like to roll and you feel comfortable, give it a go!
Feeling ready?
We're so excited for you. This is the beginning of a hard but incredibly rewarding journey. You'll make life long friends, increase your fitness and be part of a community that feels like family.
